La Viga Canal: Pathway from a Land of Lakes to One of Roadways

Challenges of Living in the Middle of a Lake

The Mexica (Meh-SHE-kah) were the last of a series of Nahuatl-speaking "chichimeca", i.e., "barbarian" or hunter-gatherer tribes, to arrive in the Valley called Anahuac from the 12th to the early 13th century. When they arrived, in 1225 according to their accounts, the Valley was already a settled area. So they initially hired out as mercenary warriors to chiefs of some of the dominate altepetls, city-states, around Lake Texcoco.

After a hundred years, they sought their independence and, hence, their own piece of land. Their founding legend relates that they encountered it on a swampy group of islands when their god, Huitzilopochtli, gave them a sign: an eagle (Mexican golden eagle) perched on a prickly pear cactus, holding a rattle snake in its claws. So they built their independent altepetl on these islands, naming it Tenochtitlan, "Prickly Pear among the Rocks".

Foundations of Tenochtitlan: Turning Many Islands Into One

It turns out that Tenochtitlan or, more accurately, the island on which it was built over a two hundred year period (1325-1520) was not one island but a group of five islands (yellow circles on map below) which the Mexica, you might say, cobbled together with mud from the lake and their sweat.

  • Pile-driving: Starting from the largest island (central yellow circle, above), they extended their land and connected to two other islands by driving log pilings into the lake-bed and filling the space with packed mud taken from the lake (cimentación por pilotaje light orange). Remnants of such wood pilings have been uncovered in archeological excavations in the Centro HistóricoSo even the central island was marshy and had to be shored-up.
Tlatelolco is the island (yellow circle) to the north, where another Mexica altepetl was established and which Tenochtitlan took over in the early 14th century. The more rectangular island to the west of the central island was along the route to the altepetl, city-state of Tacuba on the western lake shore. 
  • Chinampas: Using essentially the same method of driving piles and filling the created space with soil, chinampas, "islands", were created and used to grow fruits and vegetables. The lake's water became canals between the man-made "islands." This method continues to be used in the southern delegacións, boroughs, of Xochimilco and Tláhuac, but it was also ubiquitous around Tenochtitlan, the other islands in the lakes and along the lake shores. From the map above, it can be seen that these chinampas (dark-orange) constituted the majority of Tenochtitlan's "land."

Water as Blessing and Threat

Building a city on islands in a lake had both its benefits and its dangers. There was a virtually limitless supply of water to raise crops on the chinampas. The lake also provided the Mexica with a kind of fortress, protected by water on all sides. As they came to dominate the Valley in the 15th century, they built causeways to provide access to their newly subjugated neigbors. These had removeable bridges that enabled defense against any enemy attack.

The other threat was floods. What is now central Mexico has two distinct seasons: a dry period from October to May and a wet one from May to October. Rains during the summer can be torrential, dumping many inches of water in twenty minutes. As the Valley has no outlet to the sea, flooding can be significant. Major floods occurred frequently, inundating Tenochtitlan. When the Spanish defeated the Mexica in 1521 and took over the city to transform it into Mexico City, they experienced the same disastrous conditions.

So in 1607, Viceroy Don Luis de Velasco y Castile commissioned engineer Enrico Martínez with the herculean task of draining the Mexico Valley basin.  The ambitious project contemplated reversing the flow of the Cuautitlan River (main tributary feeding Xaltocan and Zumpango lakes to the north of Lake Texcoco) and connecting it to the Tula watershed (now in the state of Hidalgo) via a tunnel through the mountains.

The stoppage of the work in the 1620s by order of the viceroy was one of the factors that contributed to creating one of the greatest disasters suffered by Mexico City in the 17th century: the great flood of 1629. Subsequently, the Huehuetoca Royal Drainage project was resumed. Turning a Land of Lakes into One of Canals

With the drainage system completed, Lake Texcoco and the lakes to its north began to dry up, and the new land became farmland. However, a number of canals from the time of the Mexica were retained and made into major routes for goods to arrive in the city. What became known as the Acequia Real, the Royal Canal, continued to connect Lake Xochimilco with the center of the city. After Independence, it became known officially as the National Canal, but commonly as La Viga, "The Beam".

Paseo de la Viga

In 1785, Viceroy Bernardo de Galvez ordered a promenade built along the Royal Canal. When de Galvez died unexpectedly, it was completed under the mandate of the new viceroy, the Second Count of Revillagigedo, who undertook a major renewal of the cityscape.

The Paseo ran from south of the Church of San Pablo Nuevo, in what was then the southeast corner of the city, to the Garita (tollhouse) de la Viga (see map above). It was approximately one kilometer, a little over half a mile in length, and thirty meters, or nearly a hundred feet, wide. On Sundays, families would take a paseo, stroll, along the western side of the Canal. They could also ride horses or in carriages or travel on the Canal on trajineras, flatbottomed boats that are polled by their owners, just like in the canals of Xochimilco today.

From Waterways to Highways

The Paseo and the Canal continued in use until the 1920s, when the growing use of automobiles and trucks replaced the utility of water transport. This led to the Canal's neglect and decline into a place of contaminated water and dumped garbage. Finally, in mid-century, most of the Canal was filled in and buried under a roadway that memorializes its name, Calzada de la Viga.

Actually, a portion of the original canal still exists. South of the highway Rio Churubusco, Calzada de la Viga becomes Avenida Canal Nacional, a divided roadway with the remaining waterway running up the middle. We have subsequently learned that there is a citizens group, Corredor Cultural Canal Nacional, dedicated to restoring and maintaining the canal as a green space navagable via canoe and inhabited by wild fowl.

Artifacts of Geography

The disappearance of La Viga did not mean the end of its influence on the structure of the City. As the Canal was the route for supplying the City for over three hundred years, major markets were subsequently located near the old Canal. The huge Centro de Abastos, Supply Center, the city's major wholesale market, is just east of La Viga in Delegación Iztapalapa. Just north of Delegación Iztacalco, in the southern part of Delegación Venustaiano Caranza are the Mercado Jamaica, a flower market, and Mercado de Peces, the fish market. At this, its northern end, Calzada de la Viga serves as the boundary between Delegación Venustiano Carranza and Cuauhtémoc, the site of Centro Historico.

Near the northern end, just east of the Centro Histórico, is the huge retail Mercado de Merced. Many private commercial centers are also located along La Viga or near it. In fact, the whole eastern side of the city is dominated by commerce.

Original Villages Along the Canal


Another vestige of the Canal are the number of suviving original villages along its route. Originally, they were shoreline settlements or islands in Lake Texcoco. When the lake was dried up and the Canal became the main route for commerce from Lake Xochimilco to the city Center, these villages became stops along the way, providing their own additions to the traffic.

Among these are Culhuacán and Mexicalzingo, on the former peninsula of Iztapalapa, and the former islands of Iztacalco, Santa Anita Zacatlamanco, and Magdalena Mixihuca. Their continuity is like that of the villages we have discovered along the former rivers, such as San Diego ChurubuscoXocoMixcoacAxotlaChimilistac and San Ángel Tenanitla, along the former Magdalena and Mixcoac Rivers, southwest of Lake Texcoco.

So patterns originally created by the Valley's lacustrine geography, with its lakes and rivers, were maintained through the dramatic changes brought by their being drained and covered over. Canals and then roadways replaced natural waterways, but their locations can still be discerned­—the roadways, such as Río Churubusco and La Viga, carrying on their names. And some of the villages that developed within those geographic patterns more than five hundred years ago still exist, even if they are immersed in the sea of urbanization that has innundated the Valley like the former floods of rainy summers.

Original Villages | Tlalpan: Carnaval in Santa María Magdalena Petlacalco

Two Worlds

South of Coyoacán, where we live, is the Delegación of Tlalpan. It incorporates two dramatically different worlds, both geographically and culturally. Encompassing 312 sq. kilometers or 120 sq.miles, it is the largest delegación or borough in terms of land area, and its northern quarter is part of the flat land of the Valley of Mexico and its former lakebed.

While this area contains some original indigenous pueblos or villages, such as San Sebastián Huipulco, which we have visited, and San Pedro Mártir, which continue to maintain their identity, it has become completely urbanized. With its numerous commercial malls and modern apartment buildings it could be many other places in the world.

The southern three-quarters is strikingly different. The land rises, at first gradually and then steeply into an imposing wall of a volcanic mountain range or sierra, the Sierra of Chichinautzin. The range is part of the Trans-Mexico Volcanic Belt that runs from the Pacific, south of Puerto Vallarta, to the Gulf of Mexico in Veracruz.

In the middle of the Chichinautzin range, rising to almost 13,000 ft., nearly 6,000 feet above the Valley floor, is Ajusco, a massif composed of lava dome volcanoes that are at least three million years old. On the other side is the state of Morelos, and. about an hour drive farther, its capital, Cuernavaca. This mountainous region is mostly evergreen forest, now énclosed in the Ajusco National Park, to protect the city's remaining watershed.

On the flanks of Ajusco and the high saddle at its eastern end, at 10,000 feet, are a group of pueblos rurales, rural villages whose history goes back to the beginnings of colonial times. As indigenous communities, they are semi-independent from the political structure of the City, governing themselves according to traditional "uses and customs", with a community assembly choosing the community's leaders and making major descisions. Culturally, however, they are even further away from the modern city than their physical distance above the Valley below.

This nearby but distant world intrigued us from the beginning of our residence in Coyoacán. We can see Ajusco by leaning out our south-west facing bedroom window. Not having a car and not knowing the area, we wondered how we could enter it. As always seems to happen in Mexico, quiso la suerte, as luck would have it, in one of our almost daily chats with cab drivers we learn that our chófer of the day lived in one of the pueblos on Ajusco!

Although el Sr. Enrique González is a college graduate in accounting and had had his own practice, he had decided he could make a better living driving a cab. He and his family originally lived in the urban congestion of the Valley floor, but on weekends they frequently retreated to the national park and its forest on the mountainside, with its tranquility. So, eventually, they moved there. He generously offers to take us into his world.

One Sunday morning in February, at precisely the agreed hour, Sr. Enrique arrives in his taxi at our building's door. His wife, Lydia, accompanies him. She has a college degree in administration and works for a non-profit group that seeks to promote tourism in parts of Mexico City that are not usual tourist destinations, such as the pueblos of Ajusco.

We take our ever-key Calzada de Tlalpan south toward the mountains. We can see mighty Ajusco in front of us. Soon, the multi-lane expressway is climbing towards the two-mile high pass to Cuernavaca. We turn off onto the old two-lane highway, then onto a side road heading westward and even higher.

 As we climb, we pass through the pueblo of San Miguel Xicalco. It is a quiet Sunday morning, with little activity in the narrow streets. Its simple, one- and two-story, cinderblock and concrete buildings remind us of many rural indigenous pueblos in the Purépecha Meseta (Highlands) of Michoacán, northwest of Pátzcuaro, where we lived for three years before moving to the City. We wonder whether we will see anything "interesting".





Entering Santa María Magdalena Petlacalco, we quickly realize there will definitely be something to experience. We hear cohetes, the rocket-style firecrackers used to announce fiestas. Petlacalco, we learn later, means “house of palm mats.”

Enrique parks the car in a narrow street and we get out. Walking downhill and around a corner, we come to the atrio, atrium of a small church. That second ubiquitous component of a fiesta, la banda, is energetically playing away.


At the entrance to the plaza several young men and women are in the process of putting on costumes, full-length robes of velvateen, lined with colorful fake fur, and kerchiefs on their heads.

                              

                              

                                                   

On their heads they place elaborate—what shall we call them—headpieces? They are chinelos, the "disguised", Moorish-style dancers we have met many time in pueblos and barrios in the Valley below. We always love to watch and photograph them in their elaborate, inventive costumes, as they jump and twirl in their dances. We are also always bemused by the potpourri of symbols, mixing ancient indigenous ones with contemporary soccer teams and U.S. cartoon figures.

Feasting before fasting


So what is the occasion for this fiesta, with its representation of the Passion of Christ? It is actually Carnaval, what we know as Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, a feast on the days before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, when fasting will be the order of the season. 

As with every Mexican fiesta, there is plenty available to eat.

This group is accompanied by a giant puppet figure, a títere gigante, another frequent component of fiestas that originated in Spain and were brought by the friars as a tool of the Spiritual Conquest, to teach Spanish customs and beliefs to the indigenous people.

On the way back to Enrique's taxi, we have one final encounter that embodies the pueblo of Santa María Magdalena Petlacalco and this celebration of its long-standing identity and pride.
